Sorrowful Mysteries (Rosary on Tuesdays and Fridays)

The sorrowful mysteries are part of the twenty mysteries (along with the joyful mysteries, the luminous mysteries and the glorious mysteries) in which we immerse ourselves with the prayer of the Rosary. Going through each bead of the Holy Rosary, we enter the most difficult moments of the life of Jesus, that is, in his passion. Since His agony in the Garden of Olives until his death on the crossdiscover the strength of this love for humanity and the keys to the salvation that has been offered to us.

How to pray and meditate on the painful mysteries?

The sorrowful mysteries constitute one of the categories or series of mysteries of the Holy Rosary. In fact, for each of the five sorrowful mysteries, 1 Our Father, ten Hail Marys and a Glory be to the Father are prayed, that is, a decade. These mysteries are usually prayed the days Tuesday and Friday. For its part, Friday is traditionally associated with the passion of Christ, which commemorates Good Friday. During Lent, these mysteries can be prayed on Sunday.

For each mystery:

  • We are invited to read the Gospel passage associated with said mystery.

  • Then we pray an Our Father, ten Hail Marys and a Glory be to the Father, meditating on the fruit associated with this mystery and possibly having a special prayer intention for the sick we know, or for those who are in trial.

The five painful mysteries

The agony of Jesus

He said: “Abba -Father- all things are possible for you: take this cup away from me, but not my will, but yours be done”. (Mark 14:36)

  • Fruit of this mystery: repentance of our sins. Jesus had to offer himself for the salvation of men and for the redemption of our sins. Despite the anguish he felt, he decided to obey the will of the Father and thus redeem the original disobedience that weighs on us.

To start the ten, we can say: “Jesus, who was dying in the garden of Gethsemane, completely subject to the will of the Father, we praise you, we bless you and we adore you”

It is possible to complete the Hail Marys with this phrase: “And blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, dying in the garden of Gethsemane.”

We then end up with: “Thank you for the agony of Jesus, descend on my soul and make it truly contrite and faithful to the will of God.”

the scourging

“Pilate, to please the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and Jesus, after having him flogged, handed him over to be crucified.” (Mark. 15:15)

  • Fruit of this mystery: the domain of the senses. We are invited to understand and master what can lead us to sin. Let us be careful with what we see, what we listen to or what our human desires sometimes push us towards.

“Jesus, cruelly scourged for our sins of sensuality and impurity, we praise you, we bless you and we adore you.”

Phrase at the end of the Ave Maria: “And blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, cruelly whipped.”

“Thank you for the scourging of Jesus, descend on my soul and make it truly mortified.”

The crowning with thorns

“The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him with a red robe.” (John 19:2)

  • Fruit of this mystery: humility and forgiveness of our sins of pride. Just as our senses can lead us to sin, so can our spirit. Pride is the source of many of the ills of our humanity, which Jesus took on for us through the crown of thorns.

“Jesus crowned with thorns and outraged, we praise you, we bless you and we adore you.”

Phrase at the end of the Ave Maria: “And blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, crowned with thorns and outraged.”

“Thanks of the mystery of the crowning with thorns of Jesus, descend on my soul and make it truly contrary to the world.”

Jesus with the cross

“Jesus, carrying the cross on himself, left the city to go to the place called «of the Skull», in Hebrew «Gólgotha».” (John 19:17)

  • Fruit of this mystery: patience in tests. Jesus suffers, he goes through this trial entirely, totally, and this is how in the depth of our sufferings, of our trials, we can find Jesus. Trials do not take us away from Him: He is already there to carry us, if we wish.

“Jesus, with the cross on your shoulders, walking towards Golgotha, we praise you, we bless you and we adore you.”

Phrase at the end of Ave Maria: “And blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, who carried his cross to Golgotha.”

“Thanks of the mystery of the burden of the cross, descend on my soul and make it truly patient.”

The crucifixion and death of Jesus on the cross

“Towards three in the afternoon, Jesus exclaimed in a loud voice: «Elí, Elí, lemá sabactani», which means: «My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?». Then Jesus, crying out again with a loud voice mighty, gave up his spirit.” (Matt. 27:46,50)

  • Fruit of this mystery: thirst for the salvation of souls. Thanks to Jesus, the cross is no longer a symbol of condemnation and suffering, but the symbol of salvation and the joy of being saved.

“Jesus is nailed and died on the cross; Jesus with a pierced heart, we praise, bless and adore you.”

Phrase at the end of the Ave Maria: “And blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, nailed and died on the cross.”

“Thank you for the mystery of the death and passion of Jesus Christ, descend on my soul and make it truly holy.”

Prayer to the Holy Cross

“God Almighty

that you have suffered death

on the tree of the cross,

for our sins,

come with me,

Holy Cross of Jesus Christ,

have mercy on me.

Holy Cross of Jesus Christ,

Reject from me all sharp weapons and fire.

Holy Cross of Jesus Christ,

pour out all good on me.

Holy Cross of Jesus Christ,

cast away all evil from me.

Holy Cross of Jesus Christ,

make it light the path of health.

Holy Cross of Jesus Christ,

reject from me every attempt of death.

Holy Cross of Jesus Christ,

preserve me from bodily and temporary accidents.

May I adore the Holy Cross of Jesus Christ forever;

Jesus of Nazareth crucified, have mercy on me.

Make the evil and noxious Spirit,

depart from me, forever and ever. Amen.”
