Testimony of a taxi driver
I was pleasantly surprised. On the same day of moving around Madrid, in which I had to take several taxis, I saw that in two of them a rosary had been hung in a prominent and highly visible place. I asked the taxi drivers why they carried the rosary there. The answers did not wait:
Where do you want me to take you? one told me.
No, if it seems very good to me. But I suspect that this will have cost him to put up with the occasional ironic smile, I replied.
Well, look what I tell you. Certainly, some hooligans have commented to each other in the back seat about my occurrence. Think that I have been there for more than ten years, and in so long thousands of people have gotten into the taxi, of all ideologies and educations. But I assure you that if someone had said something to me directly against the rosary or against the Virgin, he would have remembered it for the rest of his life. I don’t like to play with sacred things and I have the right to think as I want and not hide my faith and my devotion to the Virgin. I do not mess with anyone. And whoever messes with me for my faith, “I will not rent the profits.” The least I would do is tell him: get out and take another taxi that doesn’t have a rosary. Am I offending someone by wearing it?
That’s how I like it, man. May the Virgin welcome with the goodness of her Mother the good heart and courage that she shows.
The other taxi driver explained that the rosary had been found in the back of the car, no doubt forgotten by a customer. And he put it in the place of honor in the taxi. That way, if he ever brings back the one that lost it, he’ll recognize it and I’ll be able to restore it to him. And meanwhile, he is doing some good there: he reminds me of many good things and, to those who get in, he tells them that in this taxi the Lord and the Virgin must be respected. Oh, and for the record that for this reason I am not holier than the others. But, yes, I do not lack desire and at least I bear witness to my faith.
