The 10 Commandments according to the Bible

The 10 commandments are the main basis of Catholicism and Judaism. They represent the laws sent by God in the Exodus and that were delivered to Moses on Mount Sinai.

They show the rules that God’s people must follow to be guaranteed a place in heaven. In addition, actions that offend God are described, including the worship of other gods.

Exodus shows that God gave the tablets of the commandments to Moses on two occasions. The first time, Moses broke them when he saw that the Jewish people worshiped an Egyptian god.

This image was created with the pieces of gold that the Jews took with them after crossing the Red Sea. Their blindness and foolishness led them to commit a serious sin in the eyes of God. But since they did not yet know his commandments, God forgave them.

It was then that Moses went up the mountain again and asked God for forgiveness for the sins they had committed. Thus, the pact between God and Moses was born with a new law that was set in stone and a new alliance that is still in force in the church.

Moses and the 10 Commandments

God has chosen Moses to free his people from slavery. The road was not easy, but the faith of that Jewish man led him to fulfill God’s plans. One day after leaving Egypt with all the Jewish people, he was resting at the foot of Mount Sinai.

He felt the call of God and climbed the mountain. There God wrote with his finger each one of the laws that they had to follow to become his true children. With the 10 commandments a new era begins in Judaism and the alliance between God and men is sealed.

Meaning of each commandment

You will love God above all things

Above God there is nothing and no one, since He is the only creator and giver of life. Loving God implies worshiping him in his divine form and fulfilling his commandments. When we say, above all things, it is because although something attracts us the most is our need to be with God.

You shall not say God’s name in vain

Respecting God and not offending him is what this commandment asks of us. Swearing in his name is an offense and when we promise in his name without fulfilling, we are seriously sinning. That is why, before putting God as a witness of our actions, we must be good Christians.

You will sanctify the holidays

Respect the day of the Lord. Celebrate and worship him during the Sabbath. This commandment refers to the active practice of our faith. It is important to go to mass and commemorate each of the special feasts of the church.

You will honor your father and your mother

Respect and love for parents is one of the first teachings that the church gives us with Baptism. Jesus also spoke of the importance of family and the love that everyone should feel. Therefore, if we love God and are in communion with Him, we will reflect that love in the treatment we give our parents.

you will not kill

No one has the power to take the physical life of another, that power belongs only to God. But he is also attributed other types of death. Death of word and thought that are just as serious. Anything that harms others is against the laws of God.

Thou shalt not commit impure acts

This commandment calls us to chastity and remove any impure desire from our life. In the same way, it is related to fidelity and love for the spouse unconditionally. Lust is a sin, living with someone without being married, getting married several times, prostitution, among others.

you will not steal

Consciously and violently removing is a serious offense that God punishes severely. God’s intention with this commandment is to foster a just spirit among his faithful. It is an invitation to be respectful of the property of others and to practice charity.

You will not give false testimonies

Lies and deception are a dark path that destroys the soul. God is true and therefore, he wants his children to be honest with themselves and with others. A lie brings serious consequences on a spiritual and emotional level. Also when someone else is involved the damage is greater.

You will have no impure thoughts or desires

This commandment is closely related to the sixth. If we commit impure acts that remains in our memory. When we let desire cohabit with us, it becomes a habit. It is a circle full of vice and compulsion that we must reject.

You shall not covet

Coveting the goods of the neighbor implies incurring envy. This cardinal sin places us in a position far removed from what God expects of us.

God has given each man what he needs to live and everything he builds to improve will depend on himself. It is better to work and be constant to improve the quality of life than to want what your brother has and take it away from him.

Commandment of the Holy Mother Church

  • Hear full mass every Sunday and guard holidays. The most important solemnities in the Catholic Church are the Epiphany of the Lord, Ascension of the Lord, Corpus Christi, Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and Christmas.
  • Confess mortal sins at least once a year, in danger of death and if you have to receive communion.
  • Communion at least on Easter of Resurrection.
  • Fast and abstain from eating meat when commanded by Holy Mother Church. The fast days are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Refrain from eating meat every Friday.
  • Help the church in all its needs.

What does God seek from Christians by giving the 10 commandments?

God’s primary intention is build men with a spiritual and religious sense based on their behavior. If we look at each of the commandments, we can see that they are divided into two parts.

The first part focuses on everything that God is and what he expects from men. In his delivery, his faith, his love and the fact of accepting him as the only God. On the other hand, we see 6 commandments that summarize our actions as Christians.

It refers to the bond we have with our brother and with the enemy. Although these commandments are presented as prohibitions, the simple fact of fulfilling them already makes us successful.

The 10 Commandments for children

  • You will love God above all things. When we worship other gods we are hurting the one who gave us life.
  • You will not take God’s name in vain. Swearing in his name is not pleasing to God. He feels that we are using him to hurt others.
  • You will sanctify the holidays. Attend mass regularly, especially the most important holidays for God.
  • You will honor your father and your mother. We must love dad and mom because they are the greatest gift that God has given us in this life. They take care of us and protect us always.
  • You will not kill. To kill is to be violent and it hurts people. God wants us to be good children and to respect and care for all life on earth.
  • Thou shalt not commit impure acts. We must take care of and respect our body, since our Baptism we become the temple of the Holy Spirit and it is God who is in us.
  • You will not steal. Even if we have nothing, if we steal we hurt God. Anything we want we can honestly have.
  • You will not give false testimony. Lies are not good, by lying we hurt ourselves and others.
  • You will not indulge impure thoughts or desires. When we have a bad thought towards another person we must forget it and ask God to take care of us from those desires.
  • You shall not covet another’s property. God has given us what we need to be happy. We have life, a family and the love of our parents. We must be grateful and never wish for what our brother has.
