The arrogance of ignorance

The arrogance of ignorance

A young university student sat on the train in front of an elderly man, who devoutly passed the rosary beads. The boy, with the arrogance of his few years and the pedantry of ignorance, told him: “It seems incredible that you still believe in those old things…”.

“That’s right. Don’t you?” the old man replied. “Me!” said the student, laughing loudly. Believe me: throw that rosary out the window and learn what science says.

“Science?” asked the old man with surprise. I don’t understand it that way. Perhaps you could explain it to me?

“Give me your address,” replied the boy, pretending to be important and in a protective tone, I can send you some books that can enlighten you.”

The old man took a business card from his wallet and handed it to the student, who read in astonishment: “Louis Pasteur. Institute of Scientific Research in Paris.”

The poor student blushed and did not know where to go. He had offered to instruct in science who, by discovering the anti-rabies vaccine, he had rendered, precisely with his science, one of the greatest services to humanity.

Pasteur, the great sage who did so much good to men, never hid his religious conviction.
