the book of your life
Today you close one more volume of the book of your life, because the year ends. When you started this book everything was yours, God put it in your hands, you could make of it whatever you wanted: a poem, a nightmare, a blasphemy, a system, a prayer… You could… Today you can’t; it is not yours, you have already written it, now it belongs to God. God is going to read it to you the same day you die with all the details of it. You can no longer correct it. He has passed into the realm of eternity.
Think for a few moments on this last night of the year. Take your old book and leaf through it slowly, let its pages pass through your hands and your conscience. Have the pleasure of seeing yourself. Read all. Repeat those pages of your life in which you put your best style.
Do not forget that one of your best teachers is yourself. Also read those pages that you wish you had never written. No, don’t try to rip them off. It is useless, have courage to read them. They are yours, you cannot tear them off; but you can cancel them when you write your next book. If you do, God will pass these through when you read your next book on the last day.
Read your old book on the last night of the year. There are pieces of yourself in it, it’s a passionate drama in which the first character is you. You on the scene with God, with your family, with your work, with society. You have written it with the amazing instrument of your free will on the immense and shifting surface of the world. It is a mysterious book that for the most part, the most interesting, can only be read by God and you.
If you feel like kissing him, kiss him; if you want to cry, cry; cry loudly over your old book on this last night of the year. But above all, pray over your old book. Take it in your hands, lift it up to the sky and tell God only two things: Thank you! and Pardon!… Then give it to Christ.
It doesn’t matter how it is, even if it has black pages. Christ knows how to forgive. Tonight God will give you another completely white and new book. It’s all yours. You will be able to write on it whatever you want.
Put God’s name on the first page. Then tell him not to let you write it alone. Tell him to always take you by the hand… and from the heart…
