the bronze serpent

In the Old Testament, and more specifically in the book of Numbers, we find the events that occurred during the passage of the Jewish people through the desert. Let us remember that this people oscillated between rebellion and repentance, both towards Moses and towards God. In addition to this, they lived complaining, for which they received harsh punishments from the Lord. One of the most significant episodes was that of the bronze serpent, which not only shows the attitude of the people in the desert, but also God’s mercy towards them. We invite you to discover the history of Moses and the bronze serpent and the parallelism that the Gospel of John presents between the serpent of moses and the cross of Jesus.

Moses and the bronze serpent

“4 The Israelites set out from Mount Hor by way of the Red Sea, to border the territory of Edom. But along the way, the town lost patience
5 and began to speak against God and against Moses: “Why did you bring us out of Egypt to make us die in the desert? There is no bread or water here, and we are fed up with this miserable food!”
6 Then the Lord sent fiery serpents against the people, and they bit the people, and so many Israelites died.
7 The people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you. He intercedes before the Lord, so that he removes these serpents from us ». Moses interceded for the people,
8 And the Lord said to him, “Make a fiery serpent and put it on a pole. And everyone who has been bitten, looking at it, will be cured.
9 Moses made a bronze serpent and put it on a pole. And when someone was bitten by a snake, he looked at the bronze snake and was healed ” (Numbers 21:4-9).

The Cross of Jesus

Just as the Israelites suffered for their complaints, we also suffer when we do what is not pleasing to God. Sometimes, our actions lead to judgments and curses that we ourselves provoke, or simply result from our bad behavior. Fortunately, there is a way to get out of this pain and to preserve our lives: look away from our pain and look at the bronze serpent that rose high on a tree. What does this mean for us today? John 3:14-15 explains it to us as follows: “In the same way that Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, it is also necessary that the Son of man be lifted up on high, so that all who believe in him may have eternal Life.” As Christians, today we are invited to believe in Jesus Christ to heal our wounds and sufferings, believing that the Son of God carried them on the Cross.
