The butcher’s ax
In the town of Aranda de Duero, province of Burgos (Spain), there lived a couple: he, who had been led to disbelief and skepticism by anti-religious readings and libertine friends, continually rebuked his wife, a fervent Christian, for their religious practices.
One day, the wife returned after attending the Holy Mass, and she brought in her hand, along with the prayer book, the Holy Scapular of Mount Carmel with which she had come to receive Holy Communion. The husband, in a fit of rage, took it from her hands, placed it on the bench where he was cutting the meat and, full of courage, took the ax to cut it into pieces. However, the ax fell repeatedly on the holy Scapular, without affecting him in the least. In one of the blows he bounced the ax, hitting the butcher in the forehead… He opened his eyes of faith before that repeated prodigy and, kneeling before the holy Scapular, asked the Blessed Virgin for forgiveness for her sacrilege.
He then went to church, where, with many tears, he confessed and received Holy Communion and also the Holy Scapular, which he wore with singular devotion throughout his life.
From then on he behaved as a model Christian husband.
