The danger of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit…

.- In this message we deal with the case of a man who “downloaded his conscience anonymously on our site www.conciencia.net and authorized us to quote him, as follows:

Years ago as a child I read the verse about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. I thought a lot about it, and I ended up thinking blasphemy against Him. I am very afraid. I don’t know what to do.

This is the advice my wife gave him:

Dear Friend:

As you may have noticed, we generally don’t give advice that has to do with theology. There are many organizations, including churches, that spend almost all of their time dealing with this issue.

However, you are scared and confused, so let’s give you our advice. Keep in mind that everything we say is based on our belief in the principles of the Bible, which is the Word of God addressed to us.

The Bible documents many things that Jesus Christ himself, the Son of God, said when he lived in this world. When you were a boy, he read what He said about the danger of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. The word “profanity” must have been very difficult and unusual for you back then, just as it is for many adults now.

Blasphemy is much more than the words themselves that come from the mouth. Words are preceded by an attitude of the heart. After warning about blasphemy, Jesus Christ said that the words that come out of a person’s mouth reveal what is in his heart. For this reason, when what comes out of the mouth is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, it is because there is an unalterable rejection of the Holy Spirit in the heart.

One of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to convict us of sin. He uses our conscience to get our attention. That’s why most of us feel bad when we’ve done something wrong, even if we didn’t do it on purpose.

If we refuse to listen to it, the volume of the messages that our conscience sends us is lower and lower. Over time some people stop hearing the voice of their conscience completely. Their hearts are full of evil, and they intentionally reject the messages from the Spirit. At that point, they have completely excluded the Holy Spirit. They do what they want, good or bad, and they don’t even feel guilty. Without that sense of guilt, they don’t ask for forgiveness, so they can’t be forgiven. And that makes their sin unforgivable, which Christ warned would happen to those who blaspheme the Holy Spirit.

As a child, you did not have the evil in your heart to completely reject the Holy Spirit. The proof of that is that he still feels bad about what he did. Feeling bad means that you are listening to the Holy Spirit. So you can ask for forgiveness and be sure that God will forgive you. If you had committed the unforgivable sin, you would feel no guilt about it because the Holy Spirit would have stopped convicting you of your sin.

That ends what Linda, my wife, recommends. The complete advice, which due to lack of space we could not include in this edition, can be read if you go to the website www.conciencia.net and click on the tab that says: “Cases”, and then look for Case 593.
