the pearl necklace
Teresa was a cute five-year-old girl with sparkling eyes. One day while she and her mother were visiting the store, Teresa saw a plastic pearl necklace that cost $2.50. How much she wanted to possess him! She asked her mom if she would buy it for her, and her mom said, Let’s make a deal, I’ll buy you the necklace and when we get home we’ll make a list of chores you can do to pay for the necklace, okay? Teresa agreed, and her mom bought her a pearl necklace.
Teresa worked hard every day to accomplish her tasks. In a short time, Teresa paid off her debt. Teresa loved her pearls! She wore them everywhere: to kindergarten, to bed, and when she was out with her mom.
Teresa had a father who loved her very much. When Teresa went to her bed, he would get up from her favorite chair to read her her favorite story. One night, when she finished the story, she said to him: “Teresa, do you love me?”, “OH, yes dad”. “Then give me your pearls,” he requested. “OH, Dad! Not my pearls,” Teresa said. “But I’ll give you Rosita, my favorite doll. Do you remember her? You gave her to me last year for my birthday. And I’ll give you her trousseau too, okay, Dad?” It’s okay, it doesn’t matter,” giving her a kiss on the cheek. “Good night, little one.”
A week later, her father asked her again at the end of the daily story: “Teresa, do you love me?” “Oh, yes dad, you know I love you!” she told him. “Then give me your pearls.” “OH, Dad! Not my pearls, but I give you Lazos, my toy horse. He is my favorite, his hair is so soft and you can play with him and braid him.” “OH, no baby girl, it’s okay,” her dad said into her cheek, “Happy dreams.”
A few days later, when Teresa’s father entered her bedroom to read her a story, Teresa was sitting on her bed, her lips trembling. “Here, dad,” she said, and held out her hand. He opened it and inside it was her much loved necklace, which she gave to her father. With one hand he took the plastic pearls and with the other he took a small blue velvet box from his pocket. Inside the box were some beautiful genuine pearls. He had had them all this time, waiting for Teresa to give up the trinket so he could give her the valuable piece.
And so it is with our Heavenly Father. He is waiting for us to give up worthless things in our lives to give us precious treasures. Is not the Lord good? This makes me think about the things that I cling to and I wonder: what is it that God wants to give me in his place?
And to you… what does the Lord say to you?
“At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: “When you pray, do not talk much, like the pagans, who imagine that by dint of talking a lot, they will be heard. Do not imitate them, because the Father knows what they need, before they ask him. . From the Gospel According to Saint Matthew 6, 7-8
