About the Virgen del Carmen
The story of the Virgen del Carmen begins in Israel, specifically on Mount Carmel. The name of this mountain comes from Karm-El, which means “Garden or Vineyard of God”.
There, in 1251, the Virgin appeared to a hermit who was part of the Order of Our Lady of Mount CarmelSaint Simon Stock to whom he gave a scapular.
This scapular became one of the most distinctive signs of the religious group.
The Carmelites
In 1499, the first female communities devoted to the Virgen del Carmen, known as Carmelites, began to emerge.
Among them emerged saints of the stature of Saint Teresa of Avilareformer of the Carmelite Order; the Chilean Teresa of the Andes; the philosopher Edith Stein exterminated by the Nazis in Auschwitz for being Jewish; the french Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, among other.
