The root of the laurel
Near a stream of fresh water, there was a small forest. The trees were very varied. They all spent their energy to be taller and bigger, with many flowers and perfumes, but they remained weak and had little strength to take root.
On the other hand, a laurel said: “I’d better invest my sap in having a good root; that way I’ll grow and I’ll be able to give my leaves to all those who need me.”
The other trees were very proud of being beautiful; nowhere were there so many colors and perfumes! And they did not stop admiring each other and talking about each other’s charms, and so on, all the time, looking at each other and laughing at each other.
The laurel suffered these mockery at every moment. They laughed at him, showing off his flowers, perfumes and abundant foliage. “Laurel!”
But the laurel was convinced otherwise; he wanted to love others and that is why he had strong roots.
One fine day, a great storm came, and it shook and huffed and puffed over the forest. The largest trees, which had immense branches, were hit so hard that no matter how much they shouted, they could not prevent the wind from knocking them over. On the other hand, the little laurel, as it had few branches and a lot of roots, barely lost a few leaves. Then everyone understood that what keeps us firm in difficult times is not appearances, but what is hidden in the roots, inside your heart, there in your soul… your faith.
