The “sinful self”

At the beginning of the mass, after the entrance song, an act of collective contrition is prayed. This prayer invites every Christian to recognize his sins before God and before his brothers, before the priest asks God for his mercy towards all sinners.

Words of the “I sinner” or act of contrition

“I confess before Almighty God,
and before you brothers,
that I have sinned a lot
of thought, word,
action and omission.
Because of me, because of me,
because of my great fault (pounding his chest with his fist).
That is why I pray to Holy Virgin Mary,
to the angels, to the saints
and to you brothers
intercede for me
before God, our Lord.
Amen.”

Why an Act of Contrition at the beginning of Mass?

In order to fully experience the encounter with the Lord through listening to the Word and celebrating the Eucharist, we must be freed from everything that prevents us. By humbly acknowledging our sins, we open our hearts to this encounter. We also recognize that we need the prayer of our brothers, those who are here and those who are in heaven, and therefore we agree to pray for them as well. We do not live our sinful condition alone, but together in a spirit of brotherhood.

We recognize our bad thoughts, our bad actions towards God and our neighbor, but also our shortcomings, all the good that we did not want or could not do (sin by omission).
