Venerable Lucia de Jesus

The main protagonist of the apparitions was born on March 22, 1907 in Aljustrel, belonging to the parish of Fátima (Portugal).

On June 17, 1921, she entered the nuns of Santa Dorotea, who took care of the Vilar Asylum (Porte). She then entered Tuy (Spain), where she took her habit and they named her María Lucía de Los Dolores.

He made his religious profession of temporary vows on October 3, 1928 and perpetual vows on October 3, 1934. On March 24, 1948, she entered the Carmel of Santa Teresa in Coimbra (Portugal), taking the name of Sister Maria Lucia of the Immaculate Heart. On May 1, 1949, she made her solemn vows.

Sister Lucia went to Fatima several times: on May 22, 1946; on May 13, 1967; in 1981 to direct a painting about the apparitions in the Carmelo de Fátima; on May 13, 1982 and May 13, 1991.

She was called to the Father’s House on February 13, 2005.

On June 22, 2023, Pope Francis recognized the heroic virtues of Sister Lucia and she was declared Venerable.

San Francisco Marto

He was born in Aljustrel, Fatima, on June 11, 1908. He was baptized on June 20, 1908.

He fell victim to pneumonia in December 1918 and died in Aljustrel at 10 p.m. on April 4, 1919.

His mortal remains were buried in the Fátima parish cemetery until March 13, 1952, when they were transferred to the Basilica of Cova da Iria (right side as you enter).

His great concern was to “console Our Lord.” The Spirit of love and reparation for the offended God were notable in his brief life. According to his story, little Francisco spent long hours “thinking about God”, which is why he was always considered a contemplative.

His precocious vocation as a hermit was recognized in the decree of heroic virtues, according to which, after the apparitions “he hid behind the trees to pray alone; other times he went up to the highest and solitary places and there he gave himself up to the prayer so intensely that he did not hear the voices of those who called him”.

Francisco Marto beatification date: April 9, 2000, by Saint John Paul II.

Francisco Marto canonization date: May 13, 2017, by Pope Francis.

Saint Jacinta Marto

She was born in Aljustrel, Fátima, on March 11, 1910. She was baptized on March 19, 1910. A victim of pneumonia, she fell ill in December 1918. She was admitted to the Hospital de Villa Nueva de Ourém and later in Lisbon, at the Hospital of D. Estefania. She died at 10:30 p.m. on February 20, 1920.

From January 21 to February 2, 1920, she was in the Orphanage of Our Lady of Miracles, on Estrella Street, in Lisbon, a house founded by D. María Godinho, whom Jacinta called “Godmother”. The Mass of her body was celebrated in the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, in Lisbon, where her body was deposited until February 24, the day it was transported to an urn for the Villa Nueva de Ourem. She was transferred to the Fatima cemetery on September 12, 1935, the date the urn was opened.

On May 1, 1951, it was finally transferred to the Basilica of the Sanctuary of Fatima.

In addition to the 5 Apparitions in the Cova de Iría and one of the Angels, Our Lady appeared to Jacinta 4 more times at home during her illness, once in the Parish Church on Ascension Thursday, and again in Lisbon on the orphanage and the hospital.

His life was characterized by the Spirit of sacrifice, love for the Heart of Mary, for the Holy Father and for sinners.

Driven by the concern for the salvation of sinners and the reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, she offered a sacrifice to God of everything, as the Angel recommended, always saying the prayer that Our Lady taught them: “Oh Jesus, it is for your love, for the conversion of sinners (and increased, by the Holy Father, too), and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary”.

Jacinta Marto beatification date: April 9, 2000, by Saint John Paul II.

Jacinta Marto canonization date: May 13, 2017, by Pope Francis.
