They will know the truth

The Gospel of John take up the words of Jesus that say: “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32) But what does this mean concretely? Note that in the New Testament, the word “TRUE” is used more than 98 times, for example, when Jesus speaks of the spirit of truth saying: (…) he will introduce you to all the truth” (John 16:13). In this way, it is necessary to recognize the importance of knowing what the truth is according to the Word of God: For that we invite you to discover more what the Scriptures say through the following biblical passage.

Biblical passage from the Gospel of John

“30 As he spoke thus, many believed in him.
31 Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in him: “If you remain faithful to my word, you will truly be my disciples:
32 will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”
33 They replied, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone.
How then can you say: “You will be free”?
34 Jesus answered them, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
35 The slave does not remain forever in the house; the son, on the other hand, remains forever.
36 Therefore, if the Son sets you free, you will be truly free.”
(John 8:30-36).

The truth will set you free

Who was Jesus addressing?

On that occasion Jesus spoke to all the Jews who believed in Him. Furthermore, Jesus also testified to all those who listened to His message, saying that He was the Son of God, sent into the world to save sinners and give eternal life. In fact, Jesus promised all who believed these words that the truth would set them free, but on one condition that we will see next.

Remain faithful to the Word of God

The condition for receiving the freedom that Jesus spoke of is knowing the truth. The Greek word used in the original version of the Scriptures is “ginosko“, which translates as “know“. In fact, it is a word that the Jews used to refer to sexual relations that take place between a man and a woman. Therefore, when Jesus speaks of “know the truth“, refers to go deeper, to have a personal experience with the Word of God, so that we can be penetrated by it. The apostle James says: “On the other hand, he who attentively considers the perfect Law, which makes us free, and becomes attached to it, not as a distracted listener, but as a true keeper of the Law, will be happy by practicing it” (James 1:25)

The truth will make them free

After this affirmation of Jesus, the Jews immediately replied that they were not slaves and that they never had been, to which Jesus responded by saying: I assure you that everyone who sins is a slave to sin. (John 8:34) and showed the solution to be free: to know the truth! In fact, when we realize that even though sin leads to death, God loves us so much that he gave his only Son so that we might have life, this truth has the power to set us free. Let us remember that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and let us do our best to know him, because he has told us: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5).
