.- A policeman from a shelter in New York, USA, was suspended without pay this Wednesday after he appeared in a video beating a Venezuelan migrant.
The Venezuelan recently arrived in the city, according to The New York Times.
The video shows the migrant, identified by the newspaper as Meiver Martínez, upset and yelling at the officer repeatedly. in Spanish: “Don’t hit me”, and then he kicks a locker.
Then the policeman, whose name has not been released and who was staring at him, punches him on the cheek.
According to the Times, the 21-year-old Martinez said the officer had been harassing him because he was taking a long time to get out of bed. He also recounted that after the incident eight officers jumped on him, kicked him and shot him three times with a stun gun.
Martínez, who arrived in the city a month ago, assured that he was handcuffed and taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was treated and that he was not charged with any crime.
New York has received more than 8,000 migrants, most of them Venezuelans, and they have been sent to city shelters or hotels contracted by the City Council.
The Department of Homeless Services, which runs the shelters, said it does not tolerate “any form of violence or misconduct” and is investigating the incident, which occurred at a Brooklyn borough shelter.
