CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- The President of the United States, Joe Biden, hosted the annual lighting ceremony of the White House menorah, on the fourth night of Hanukkah this Wednesday.
During his speech, Biden referenced the story of Hanukkah and the destruction of the Second Temple. Biden compared the holy temple to the “temple of our democracy.” The comparison struck many as ironic, since democracy is a Greek concept, the very people (and ideas) the Maccabees fought against.
Later in his speech, the US president seemed optimistic that the third temple will be rebuilt, saying: “Whether it is the temple in Jerusalem or a temple of our democracy, nothing broken or desecrated is irreparable…nothing. We can always build back better. Or maybe, rebuild brighter,” Israel365 News reports.
Biden also welcomed Israel’s new ambassador to the United States, Michael Herzog. After the introduction, Biden recalled his meeting with former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir and said that he would be the liaison between Israel and the Egyptians after the ’73 Yom Kippur War and a meeting with Meir that he described as ” very depressing.”
On the lessons of the Hanukkah holiday, Biden said: “The story of Chanukah provides a powerful lesson and nurtures the source of hope. In the darkness there is light. In cynicism, there is hope and optimism and an unshakable belief that miracles are possible.”
Biden also gave an honorable mention to a guest named Rabbi Aharon Glatt for “encouraging his congregation to get vaccinated.” Ironically, Biden, who champions the mask and vaccine mandates, praised the freedom lessons that could be learned from the Maccabees.
