What is the difference between Protestants and Catholics?

CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- Both Catholics and Protestants believe in God and in the trinity that he represents together with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, despite the fact that both currents of religious thought believe in the fundamental truth, they are opposed in other aspects that have to do with Christian life and worship.

The Bible is fundamental to both religions, however, the differences begin in its interpretation. Also in this aspect it is important to point out that for Catholics there are 76 sacred books, while for Protestants there are 10 less.

Protestants believe that only in the Bible are the answers to living the faith, but Catholics also base their faith on the magisterium and on the Catholic tradition.

Under the interpretative differences between the two religions, Protestants do not pray to saints or Mary and do not believe in purgatory, traditions that are merely Catholic.

According to the Catholic religion, purgatory is the place where the dead go to purify themselves of their sins and find salvation, but for Protestants the soul goes to the presence of God once the person dies.

Regarding salvation, for Catholics faith leads us to salvation, but it must be accompanied by good works; however, for Protestants it is enough to just believe in the Lord.

Another difference has to do with the perspective on Mary, for Protestants she is a respectable figure and mother of Jesus, while for Catholics she is the central axis of their dogma and worthy of worship.

Catholics also differ from Protestants on this point, since they believe that Mary was not a sinner and that she is a mediator between God and men.

On the other hand, Catholics believe that people who followed the example of the Lord are holy and worthy of worship when they die, however, for Protestants the only one who deserves to be glorified is God, reports RT.

These saints are made statues that are venerated by Catholics, but for Protestants, the praise of statues is a sin and a lack of respect for God.

Another difference is that Protestants do not consider the Pope’s leadership Biblical, unlike Catholics who consider him a “vicar of Christ”, in other words, a substitute for Christ on earth, reports Christian Devotionals.

On the other hand, Catholic leaders must be celibate, that is, they cannot have marriages or sexual relations; while for Protestants their leaders can combine their married life with their service.

Another difference is in the sacraments, for Catholics there are seven: baptism, the Eucharist, confirmation, penance, anointing of the sick, priestly orders and marriage; for their part, for Protestants there are only two: baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

There are many differences between the two religions, and despite the fact that there are ecumenical movements to achieve church unity, the great differences between Catholics and Evangelicals make many reject the possibility of being united.
