CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- “The heavens declare the glory of the Lord.” All creation points to the glory and majesty of our great God.
The seven days of creation recorded in Genesis reveal the very origins of the universe at the hand of our magnificent Creator.
The first day
God created time, space, and matter. He also created light and separated the light from the darkness. He called the light day and the darkness night.
The second day
There has been much discussion about the exact nature of what God did on the second day. During this day, God created an expanse to separate “the waters from the waters.”
The waters mentioned are those present from the beginning, and the expansion is a space that God puts in the middle of the pre-existing water to separate it into two layers or levels; the water above the expansion and the water below the expansion.
What does that mean? Some have proposed that the expanse refers to the atmosphere surrounding the Earth, in which case the “waters over expanse” refer to the water vapor in the atmosphere that forms the clouds.
The third day
God ordered the landscape of the Earth by gathering all the water in one place and allowing dry land to appear. God called the dry land earth, and the water he called seas. So God created plant life on Earth.
The fourth day
God created the heavenly bodies in our universe. He created the sun to rule the day, the moon to rule the night, and he also created all the stars (and planets). He arranged the stars, the sun, and the moon in such a way that we could keep track of the seasons, days, and years.
The fifth day
God created all the birds and sea creatures.
the sixth day
God created all earthly creatures and then created humanity in His own image. God instructed humanity (Adam and Eve) to be fruitful and multiply. He also gave them dominion over the Earth.
the seventh day
God rested on the seventh day because his work of creation was complete.
Does it matter if they are literal or metaphorical days?
The seven days of creation have generated a very heated debate, but does it really matter if a Christian believes that the seven days are literal or metaphorical? If it does not matter.
What the Word of God says and what it means is important because the Word of God is the ultimate authority on all things spoken of.
Although a Christian’s salvation does not depend on how they interpret the Creation account, this theme focuses on an essential question: Who has the ultimate authority? Man or God?
The common views held by secular scientists regarding the origins of the Universe greatly influence the way in which they interpret the Creation account in many Christian circles.
Discussions about God’s timing
It is worth taking a moment to say that whenever this discussion takes place, all Christians should be prepared to discuss these matters with love, grace, and patience with one another.
Loving one another is more important than making a point or winning an argument, but not at the expense of truth.
There are many well-intentioned Christians who try to reinterpret Genesis because they believe that God’s Word is authoritative, but they also believe that secular claims to the origins of the Universe are irrefutable facts.
The claims of “science” are not as authoritative as we are led to believe, especially regarding the origins of our universe. No one refutes the scientific observations recorded in the current conditions of our world.
The question of our origins, however, is not a science that can answer. God created our universe in supernatural conditions that do not reflect its current conditions.
