Explanation of the WYD 2019 logo

The official logo of the World Youth Day (WYD) presented in May 2018 by the Communication and Press Office of the Archdiocese of Panama, reported that the author of the logo was Ambar Calvo, a 20-year-old girl and student of architecture at the University of Panama.

The logo was chosen from 103 proposals that were evaluated by a jury made up of specialists in graphic design, marketing and other related professions who selected the 3 best proposals, which were then evaluated by the WYD Executive Committee, together with the new Dicastery for the Laity, the Family and Life in the Vatican.

Monsignor Ulloa Mendieta commented that Ambar Calvo’s design “was able to capture the message that we want to send to the youth of the world, the smallness of our country, but the greatness of our heart, open to everyone without excluding anyone, of the hand of the Virgin Mary, a model of a brave, committed and generous young woman who knew how to say YES to God’s call”.

“Young people are the moral and human reserve of our societies and of the Church itself, they are capable of transforming everything, positively, taking risks as the adolescent Mary of Nazareth did, if we are capable of teaching them to love as Jesus did with us. ”, the Archbishop pointed out.

The young woman, for her part, indicated that since she was 12 years old she has felt an affinity for art as a means of expression, and what she wanted to show with the proposed logo was “Maria’s tenderness and dedication in her best scene: the Hágase” .

The logo highlights the Panama Canal, which symbolizes the path of the pilgrim who discovers in Mary the means to meet Jesus; the silhouette of the Panamanian Isthmus, as a place of welcome; the red Pilgrim Cross; the silhouette of the Virgin in her “Let it be done” and the small white dots as a sign of the crown of Mary and the pilgrims from each of the five continents.

Another symbolic aspect of the winning logo is the linking of the letter “M” that is insinuated in the shape of the heart, which, although it alludes to the motto “Bridge of the World, Heart of the Universe”, also suggests the name of María.

At the Eucharistic Appointment in Panama, Bishop Ulloa pointed out that “young people are in the world so that a new country, a new Panama and a new Church can be born.”

“WYD is a breath of fresh air for this youth that needs it so much. Society, Church, wake up! Our youth dies without us doing anything. Let’s move from speech to action.”

“Young people – highlighted the Prelate – are the true protagonists of this WYD”. “This is our Day, we have to prepare it with the young people and for the young people”, he added.

Panama is a country located in the southeast of Central America. Its official name is the Republic of Panama and its capital is Panama City. It limits to the North with the Caribbean Sea, to the South with the Pacific Ocean, to the East with Colombia and to the West with Costa Rica.

It is located on the Isthmus of Panama, the isthmus that joins South America with Central America, so the location of Panama is ideal for the celebration of World Youth Day.

The President of Panama and his wife expressed their great joy at being able to host Panama the next World Youth Day in 2019

Congratulations to the Panamanian people for having had the honor of hosting WYD 2019!
