Cho was a founder of the Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul, South Korea. The pastor spent decades spreading the gospel across the country, reports CBN News.

South Korea has one of the strongest Christian communities in the world, and megachurches grew in popularity in the years after the Korean War.

At the time of his death, Cho was receiving medical treatment for a brain hemorrhage he suffered in 2020.

Cho was born in 1936 into a Buddhist family and lived through the Korean War. He converted to Christianity at age 17, when doctors told him he would die of a severe case of tuberculosis. The pastor credits God for his “miraculous” recovery from illness.

“I will never forget the blessing and grace of God in my life, for which he chose me to be his servant when I was just a little boy with lung disease, and he saved me by his grace through the atonement of the cross. of Jesus Christ,” Cho wrote years ago on his website.

Megachurch Foundation

Cho pursued the full-time ministry, graduating from Full Gospel College in 1956. Just two years later, he opened a tent shop in Seoul, which later became Yoido Full Gospel Church. The church has become one of the most popular megachurches in the world and has more than 750,000 members.

Yoido has more than 500 local churches in South Korea and has sent thousands of missionaries to countries around the world, according to the church’s news release.

Cho became one of the most influential Christian leaders in his country. He has written several books, founded a Christian newspaper and established a humanitarian organization, the church statement said.

Yonggi Cho was known for being a defender of prosperity theology and for writing the book “The Fourth Dimension”, where he preaches that Christians should explore the spiritual world in an innovative way, developing visions, dreams and some control over this dimension. , which could make the wishes of the faithful come true.
