The light of the world in the Gospel of Matthew

“14 You are the light of the world. You can’t hide a city on top of a mountain.
15 And a lamp is not lit to put it under a box, but it is put on the lampstand so that it gives light to all who are in the house.
16 So the light that is in you should shine before the eyes of men, so that they may see your good works and glorify the Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16).

May your light shine before men

The Bible tells us that: “(…) God is light, and where God is there is no darkness.” (1 John 1:5). Therefore, if we say that we are children of God, it means that we are like Him. In this way, as God is Light, we are too. What God, our Father, expects from us is that we resemble him and that we reflect his light with our actions. For this it is necessary to imitate the attitude of Jesus, the Son par excellence, who tells us: “(…)”«I assure you that the Son cannot do anything by himself but only what he sees the Father do; what the Father does, the Son does likewise.” (John 5:19). In fact, as lights, we have privileged access to the “Father of lights” (James 1:17) and we can experience his graces, peace and the provision that he gives to those who call on him. In the same way, when we act like the father, that is, with faith and love, we let our light shine and others give glory to God for our actions.

Reflect the light of God with !

We are called to reflect the light of the Lord and radiate the joy and love that Jesus came to bring to the world. To shine, you can start by praising the Lord or thanking him for his wonders. You also need to put God at the center of your life by praying daily, for example, through these prayer communities:

  • “The reflection of the day”, so that you have an encounter with Christ every day through the Holy Scriptures.
  • “The Gospel of the day” so that every morning you can get closer to God and immerse yourself in his presence.
  • “Today’s Gospel” for you to meditate on the Word of God, so that every day you are more like Him and can shine around you.

Pray and let the light of Christ shine through you with !
