7 prayers every Catholic should know

“A Catholic without prayer is like a soldier without weapons”, said Saint Josemaría Escrivá. So how are you nourishing your spiritual life daily?

This week, Ryan DellaCrosse, Ryan Scheel and Father Rich Pagano from the podcast “The Catholic Talk Show” They talked about seven prayers that every Catholic should know, in addition to the Our Father and Hail Mary.

7 prayers that every Catholic should know (in addition to the Our Father and Hail Mary)

  1. Liturgy of the Hours

    These hours include the Office of Reading, Morning Prayer (Laudes), Tuesday Hour, Sixth Hour, Ninth Hour, Afternoon Prayer (Vespers) and Evening Prayer (Compline). However, for lay people, it is sufficient and honorable to pray Lauds and Compline.

    Today you can find both the physical breviary in bookstores and online, in complete or abridged versions, as well as applications for cell phones.

  2. Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed

    I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth,

    of all things visible and invisible.

    I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son of God,

    born of the Father before all ages: God from God, light from light,

    True God of true God,

    begotten, not created, consubstantial with the Father.

    By him all things were made.

    And for us men, and for our salvation, he came down from heaven: and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit,

    in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
    He was also crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;

    He suffered and was buried.

    He rose again on the third day,

    according to the Scriptures,

    and ascended to heaven,

    where he is seated at the right hand of the Father.

    And it will come again,

    in his glory,

    to judge the living and the dead;

    and his kingdom will have no end.

    I believe in the Holy Spirit,

    Lord who gives life,

    and proceeds from the Father and the Son;

    and with the Father and the Son he is adored and glorified:

    he who spoke through the prophets.

    I believe in the Church, one, holy, catholic and apostolic.

    I profess one baptism for the remission of sins.

    And I wait for the resurrection of the dead

    and the life of the world to come. Amen.

  3. Creed (Symbol of the Apostles)

    I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, Our Lord; which was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit; born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified dead and buried; went down to the mansion of the dead; he rose again on the third day; ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God the Almighty Father, from where he will come to judge the living and the dead; I believe in the Holy Spirit, in the holy Catholic Church, in the communion of saints, in the remission of sins, in the resurrection of the flesh, in eternal life. Amen.

  4. Remember (Virgin Mary)

    Remember, O most pious Virgin Mary, that it has never been heard that any of those who have resorted to your protection, implored your assistance, and demanded your help, were left destitute by you. Encouraged, therefore, with equal confidence, to You, Virgin among all singular, as the Mother I turn, I rely on You, and, groaning under the weight of my sins, I prostrate myself at Your feet. Do not reject my supplications. O Mother of the human Son of God, deign to listen to them propitious and to obtain for me what I ask of You. Amen.

  5. Chaplet of Divine Mercy

    Start:
    Our Father, Hail Mary, I believe

    For large accounts:
    Eternal Father, I offer you the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of your beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the entire world.

    For small accounts:
    Through your painful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

    At the end of each mystery pray:
    O Blood and Water that flowed from the Heart of Jesus, as a source of mercy for us, I trust in You.

    At the end of the rosary, pray three times:
    Holy God, Strong God, Immortal God, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

  6. Act of Contrition

    My God, I repent, with all my heart, of all my sins and I detest them, because by sinning I not only deserved the penalties that You justly established, but mainly because I offended You, the highest good and worthy of being loved above all things. Therefore, I firmly propose, with the help of your grace, to sin no more and to flee from upcoming occasions of sin. Amen.

  7. Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel

    Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in combat, be our refuge against the evil and snares of the devil. Order God, we instantly ask, and you, prince of the heavenly militia, by divine virtue, cast Satan and all evil spirits into hell, who walk around the world to lose souls. Amen.
