Different Types of Catholic Blessings

Blessing of a person

Etymologically, to bless is “to say good things”. By blessing one or more people, we give them especially to the Lord. Therefore, the blessing is not just a matter of words, but of the heart; Through it, we ask God for all the good that is possible for these people. In fact, we can bless as much as we can to everyone we meet; We can do it as a sincere, profound and kind greeting, just as Saint Paul did:

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit remain with you all.” (2 Corinthians 13:13).

There are also more solemn blessings:

  • Be it the blessings made by the priests at the end of mass, especially to bless the congregation, or the bridal blessingto bless the union of two people.

  • EITHER the papal. One of the best-known blessings is the apostolic blessing, performed by the pope in Saint Peter’s Square, especially on Easter day: the Urbi et Orbi blessing.

Blessing of places and objects

On certain occasions, places or objects may be blessed. It is not about asking for the protection of a material good, or making an object sacred in itself, but about asking the Lord to be present at specific moments of our lives. This is, for example, the case of the blessing of work toolseither the blessing of school bags, which is done in the parishes, at the beginning of the school year. Through these objects, we ask God to sanctify our work.

also get used to bless the house when one has just moved. For this, the priest prays to the Lord to protect the people who live there, and for him to always be present within that home.

Also, we can bless the table, by praying daily for the food we eat, before each meal. This is a way of giving thanks to God, and of living this moment, simple and familiar, with gratitude and thanks.

Three short prayers of blessing

Prayer to bless the home

“May the peace of God descend on this house and on all who live in it. Most Holy Lord, Almighty Father, Eternal God: You are alpha and omega, beginning and end. You watch over us from birth to death. Deign, then, to bless the door of our house. In Your goodness, send Your holy angels from heaven to watch over, protect, accompany, comfort and encourage those who reside in this house.

We pray that you bless and sanctify this house, as you blessed the house of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and that the Angels of your light reside within the walls of this house and guard it and its inhabitants.

May this blessing descend on this house and on those who live in it, now and forever and ever. Amen.”

Prayer to bless the children

“Jesus please protect my son. I do not ask you for anything else, I only ask you to give him health and protect him from all the evil that exists in this world. I trust in you and in your eternal love. Amen.”

Prayer of blessing before traveling

“Lord, here we are, by your side we go, trusting that our way will be safe and when we return we will be safe.

You who have always shown us your paths, also illuminate this one, our path, our destiny, our walk, come with us on the road.

Be our pilot, give us confidence that everything will be fine, sow joy and peace in our hearts and make our destiny a safe, happy place, where we can enjoy, rest, live together and always remember you.

Lord, take care of us on the road, make our walk memorable, full of beautiful memories, happy sharing, make the sidewalks safe and our destiny happy. Amen.”
