October 7th is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. According to tradition, it was the Mother of God herself who one day appeared to Saint Dominic de Gusmão (1170-1221) in the church of the monastery of Prouille in 1214 and taught him how to pray the Holy Rosary and asked him to spread this practice, promising that many sinners would convert and obtain abundant graces. It is also the title by which the Virgin Mary introduced herself to the three shepherd children in her apparitions in Fátima.
The word rosary means a bunch of roses, a bouquet of roses that is offered to Our Lady. Each Hail Mary is a rose that we offer to the Mother of Heaven, with affection and hope. Thus, when we pray the complete Holy Rosary we offer a bouquet of one hundred and fifty roses to the Virgin Mary (two hundred roses when considering the Luminous Mysteries).
