Saint George – April 23

Today is Saint Georgeknown in Catholic tradition for killing a dragon that was ravaging a city after.

Born in Cappadocia (present-day Turkey), Saint George was the son of Christians, learning from an early age to believe in God and Jesus Christ as his salvation.

However, he would live a good part of his life in Palestine, after the death of his father, and there he would be promoted to captain of the army of the Roman Empire even though he was still very young, due to his skills and wisdom.

Rise and Persecution

At just 23 years old, Saint George ascended to higher positions within the imperial court of Rome, but in this period of the 4th century, Emperor Diocletian had plans to eliminate Christians. However, for not abandoning his faith, Jorge stood up in the middle of the meeting that would approve the decree, exclaiming that the idols worshiped by pagans were all false gods.

After what happened, Saint George was persecuted and humiliated in various ways by Diocletian who tried to make the young man deny his faith, but he did not give in, so because he did not deny the true God, he was beheaded.

The Dragon

Tradition has it that Saint George defeated a Dragon that was ravaging a small village, only with his faith in Jesus Christ that gave him the strength to face the terrible creature.

Saint George became a symbol of strength and faith. Its liturgical rite is made official by the Catholic Church. The festival takes place on April 23rd in both the West and the East.
