Saint John I – May 18

Today, May 18th is the day of Pope Saint John I, Pope and martyr of the Church, who became known for dedicating his life to Faith in Jesus Christ.

Saint John I was born in Italy, in the Tuscany region in the year 470, into a religious family, and dedicated his entire life to the Church.

In the year 523 John was elected pontiff, and soon after taking office he was sent to Constantinople in order to obtain tolerance from the then emperor Justinian towards the Arabs.

But even though he convinced the emperor, Saint John I was not completely successful in his mission, as during his mission he was arrested by Theodoric and sent to Ravenna, Italy.

Saint John I was arrested and suffered countless punishments and hardships, he ended up dying in prison, with his body transferred years later to Saint Peter’s Basilica
