Saint of the Day | Santo Antão – January 17th

Santo Antãoknown as the “Father of Monasticism“, is venerated as one of the first Christian hermits and a central figure in the monastic tradition. Born in Egypt around 251 AD, Santo Antão He lived in a time marked by intense persecution of Christians and sought a life of deep spirituality and retreat from the world.

At age 20, after hearing the words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew (19:21) – “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven” – Santo Antão He distributed his goods to the needy and withdrew into the desert. There, he began his hermitical life, seeking the God through prayer, fasting and penance.

The fame of his ascetic life and spiritual wisdom attracted many followers, giving rise to a monastic community in the desert. Although he led a hermitical life, Santo Antão He realized the need for spiritual guidance and community formation, thus becoming a model for future monks.
