Saint Theodore – April 20

Today is the day of Saint Theodore, devotee of Saint George, and born with a beautiful vocation to spread the Word of God.

Teodoro, which means “Gift of God”, matches special skills and talents. He was a religious man born during the 6th century in Galicia, now France.

Saint Theodore and his Prayers

Since he was little, São Teodoro demonstrated his gift for the church, the story goes that at just eight years old he was already looking for more remote and hidden places to say his prayers, arriving in his adolescence to dig a cave in the capeta of São Jorge to concentrate solely on prayer and contemplation.

Devotion to Saint George

Since he was little, Saint Theodore was devoted to Saint George, as he says that his mother had difficulties during her pregnancy, and complications occurred during her birth, so since he was little, his parents asked for the protection of the Warrior Saint.

However, despite living in a religious family, Saint Theodore’s parents showed great concern about such faith. However, one night Saint George appeared in Teodoro’s mother’s dream, and asked her to calm down.

The Dream and the Miracles

After Saint Theodore’s mother’s dream, miracles began to occur in the cave excavated by the young man, which began to attract countless believers.

Religious Life of Saint Theodore

Teodoro was not yet old enough, but the bishop of the neighboring city of Anastasiópolis took charge of the boy and ordained him a priest. And as soon as he returned to his hometown, the people elected him bishop. He remained in office for ten years, when he abandoned everything and returned to his solitary life of penance and contemplative prayer.

Death and Canonization

Once again the graces became part of daily life in Teodoro’s cave, where large crowds sought him. Theodore stayed there until April 20, 613, when he died. His festival is widely celebrated by Catholics around the world, especially in France, Germany and among Slavic-speaking Christians.
