Who was Noah in the Bible?

Noah and the flood

In Noah’s time, evil was increasing more and more on earth, however, he did not participate in these evil acts because he had his well-grounded faith in God. Indeed, the Bible tells us that: “(…) Noah was pleasing in the eyes of the Lord. The announcement of the Flood and the order to build the ark. This is the story of Noah. Noah was a just man, above reproach among his contemporaries, and he always followed the ways of God.”. (Genesis 6:8-9). After God’s warning about the flood that was going to fall on the earth, Noah had to build an ark to save himself along with his family, in this way, his obedience to God allowed the human race not to become extinct for forever.

Noah’s sons

The Bible tells us that Noah “He had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth” (Genesis 6:10) and that both they and their wives entered the ark with him. However, on one occasion Ham, son of Noah and father of Canaan saw his father’s nakedness and hastened to tell his brothers: Then Shem and Japheth took a cloak, they both put it on their backs and, walking backwards, covered their father’s nakedness. As his faces looked in the opposite direction, they did not see his father naked from him. When Noah woke up from his drunkenness and found out what his youngest son had done, he said, “Cursed be Canaan! He will be for his brothers the last of the slaves »” (Genesis 9:25) and blessed Shem and Japheth.

Biblical passages about the life of Noah

Noah heard the voice of God

“God said to Noah: “I have decided to destroy all mortals, because the earth has been filled with violence because of them. That’s why I’m going to destroy them along with the earth. Build yourself an ark of resinous wood, divide it into compartments, and coat it with bitumen inside and out.” (Genesis 6:13-14).

Noah’s Obedience

“This is what Noah did, fulfilling exactly everything that God had commanded him” (Genesis 6:22).

Noah’s ark

“When men began to multiply on earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that they were beautiful, and they took as wives as many as they wanted. Then the Lord said: “My spirit will not remain active forever in man, because he is only flesh; therefore he will not live more than one hundred and twenty years ». In those days – and even after – when the sons of God united with the daughters of men and they had children, there were giants on earth: these were the famous heroes of old “. (Genesis 6:1-4).

The flood in the Bible

“Noah was six hundred years old, and it was the seventeenth day of the second month. On that day, the fountains of the great ocean overflowed and the cataracts of heaven were opened. And heavy rain fell on the earth for forty days and forty nights.”. (Genesis 7:11-12).

God accepted Noah’s offering

“Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and taking clean animals and clean birds of all kinds, he offered burnt offerings on the altar. When the Lord breathed in the pleasant aroma, he said to himself: “Never again will I curse the ground because of man, because the designs of the human heart are evil from his youth; nor will I punish all living beings again, as I have just done. From now on, as long as the earth lasts, sowing and harvesting, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will not cease. (Genesis 8:20-21).

Ham, son of Noah

“Noah dedicated himself to agriculture and was the first to plant a vineyard. But when he drank wine, he got drunk and lay in the middle of his tent, completely naked. Cam, Canaan’s father, seeing his father naked, went to tell his brothers, who were outside. Then Shem and Japheth took a cloak, they both put it on their backs and, walking backwards, covered the nakedness of his father. As his faces looked in the opposite direction, they did not see his father naked from him. When Noah woke up from his drunkenness and found out what his youngest son had done, he said, “Cursed be Canaan! He will be for his brothers the last of the slaves »”. (Genesis 9:20-25)

Noah’s death
